Door Hanging Instructions

You can end up having a door with uneven gaps around it that does not latch correctly if you don’t install a door properly. One of the most common installation problems when installing a door concerns floors that aren’t even under a doorchoice. If the floor slopes a little and the jamb isn’t trimmed to make up for it, your latch won’t line up.

Make sure to alchoices check the width of your opening before you purchase your door. It must be 2 to 2-1/2 inches wider compared to the door. This extra space will be utilized by the jambs plus the shims and is needed so that you can install the door correctly. If your approximate opening is 32 inches, you will require a 30-inch pre-hung door.

The next stage is to check the length of your pre-hung door-jambs. You will have to minimize space and both sides of your jamb may have to be trimmed should they turn out to be too long. You will have to reduce space and both sides of the jamb may have to be trimmed should they turn out to be too long.

The vertical sides of the opening must be plumb, which means that the edges will stand either precisely vertical or perpendicular next to a level horizontal line. You will be unable to install the door properly if the openings have a trimmer stud above 3/8 inch out of plumb from top to bottom.

The door must be measured and trimmed carefully and accurately before hanging. You will require some easy carpentry tools and a few basic home improvement abilities to easily master the procedures. It will take about an hour and a half installing your first door but as soon as you know what you are doing, the second one will go in two times as fast.

If a door shuts tightly and silently and doesn’t swing open you know that it has been correctly installed. This generally shows that the door has been trimmed so as to create a very small space next to the jamb, which is often just under one-half-inch. Where the hinges sit or the lock-set slides great care must be taken when cutting the various holes or slots in the wood. Too deep and the door won’t shut correctly and can spring open; too shallow and creaks and scrapes will occur every time it moves. A sharp chisel and a steady but light hand is the method needed to create the flawless mortise.
