Bookcase Bookshelf Woodworking Plan

                  Aimee and Faith, Bookcases
These are two new woodworking plans that I have just posted on Sawtooth Ideas. The larger one is Aimee. She features a lovely rose carved molding, with adjustable shelves and a large bottom drawer. These bookcases are both built using the glue, screw and cap method. This is a simple method of woodworking that allows even a novice to achieve great results in a reasonable amount of time. This plan also features carving with a hand held rotary tool, a fun and easy method of carving.

This is Faith, a simple and charming smaller sized bookcase that features one rose and  adjustable shelves. This bookcase can also be ordered from my Etsy shop.

Make your own salad tongs

Many of you already know that I have a second passion besides woodworking: cooking. I love food. I love to eat food. I love to cook food. Basically, I love everything about food and I never met a food I didnt like.

This project was based upon necessity. Besides soups, I love salads. Dinner salads especially. I had been tossing salads with large spoons for too long; it was  time for some proper salad tongs.

If you would like to make these, please download my design. Christmas is right around the corner, you know. These are simple and would make great gifts. Make sure you use a hard wood. I used maple in mine and they worked out great.

As a bonus, I have a 13-year-old son who LOVES food. Here is his video on how to make Chinese Chicken Salad. This salad is to die for! We havent included a recipe because you can be as creative as you want with it. Just use the ingredients Wyatt mentions and make it your own.

This Week

Hello Woodworking Class.

I just wanted to remind you that our visiting artist, David Jackson, will be doing the Tuesday night lecture this Tuesday from 5-6PM in room 133. It would be a real drag for him to give his demo on Wednesday without everyone having seen his lecture the night before. If you will be in class, please ask your instructor for permission to attend the lecture. If you are lacking any blog entries still, this would be a great opportunity to make one up.

I helped people in the wood shop for two hours on Thursday and four hours on Friday and I believe a good deal of progress was made. Tomorrow I will demo putting biscuit slots in the apron rails for the tabletop hardware, as well as random-orbital sanding. As soon as someone is finished sanding their parts, I will do a demo on gluing up that persons table.

For anyone who has missed a lot of class periods: please remember, "incompletes" can not be given unless a student has completed 75% of the course work with a C or better, and has had some kind of unfortunate event befall them in the last three weeks of school. Meaning, you have these two weeks to finish your table.

I will plan on helping students in the shop this Thursday, but I have to attend the Graduate "first year review" all day Friday, so please get your more difficult questions answered before Friday.

Thanks, and see you tomorrow.

Inexpensive vacuum press

Heres a clever way to clamp up or repair certain small work pieces. Tim Sluder uses Ziploc Vacuum seal bags. The kit comes with its own pump and 3 quart-sized bags. It would also be useful for applying thin laminates to small boxes and such.

Fitting Your Shed Is As Simple As 1 2 3 The best Idea Wood Working Tactics

Sheds are considered as simple yet sturdy structures found outside of the house, usually situated in the backyard or garage. The importance of a shed in every home is strengthened by the need for a storage space where tools, house repair items, spare parts, and house supplies can easily be accessed and organized. Today, wide arrays of sheds are available in the market that relatively responds to our specific storage need. May our need for shed be for our animals, hobbies, or just a storage space, there will surely be a specific-use shed available for us to install.

Contrary to everyone’s belief, installing a shed is not as uncomplicated as it seems to be. The first thing to do is to identify your need. By doing so, you must be able to determine your purpose of having a shed. Having a clear approach on this will help you in choosing the right type of shed. If you are not decided yet on this though, you can consider first the most generic items that a shed should contain and from there, have a shed-type selected for it.

Now that you have decided on the type of shed, you can easily follow these hassle free steps in installing your new storage space:

1. Check your local building code for the allowed shed size. By doing so, you will be properly guided with your community’s policies on shed building, keeping you and your housemates safe from any danger that might be brought about by misconstruction.

2. Next thing to do is to buy all the building materials and prepare the necessary tools in the installation. While preparing, segregate already the materials according to its specific use and function. For example, separate the materials to be used as the base and foundation from the items you will use for attachment (bolts and nuts, screws, nails, adhesives, and the like). Your working tools may also include gloves and working shoes, or a mask if some soldering will be done. Don’t forget also to prepare your shed installing plan that includes your working diagrams, guidelines, measurements, and the like. Some shed making kits already come with instructions or how-to-build diagrams, so better have them on hand.

3. Keep in mind the place where your shed will be installed. Check the level of the ground for cracks, imbalance, or other deformation. The shed should also be situated in a space free from possible obstructions like tree branches, communication lines, and the like. The main purpose of this is that the shed is still categorized as a solid structure, thus, must be constructed with safety in mind.

4. Create your shed by following the instructions in your prepared guideline or work plan. Remember to work your way from the bottom or foundation, next to the walls, then to the roof, and finally to the finishing touches. Ensure as well that all appendages are properly installed and tightened for these also contribute to the strength of the structure.

Your shed is now done and ready for storage and organizing. See, it’s really that easy.

If you want to get more tips like this, then you should get a copy of the "IDEA WOOD WORKING PLANS". It is a great a comprehensive guide which will teach you every thing you need to know about wood working!

Unique under bed storage solution

WWMM Under bed storage systemWhen researching storage and organization projects, I was reminded how much space is available under a bed. We have several under-bed storage boxes that contain things we rarely use. Maybe once or twice a year.

I thought would be nice to utilize under bed space for long-term storage, but also be able to store and access more frequently used items without having to drag out the entire box.

My storage unit has a large back section with a removable lid for storing less-used, maybe seasonal items. The front of this cabinet has a drawer allowing easy access to things you need to get to more often.

Most under bed storage boxes have wheels on them, but I dont believe they are necessary. I attached furniture glides to the underside of this unit, allowing it to slide easily on wood floors or carpet.

Plans:

Before using the dimensions in these plans, be sure to carefully measure the space beneath the bed you are going to use. I designed mine to fit under my king-sized bed, but the frames of these vary greatly. Also make sure to account for areas of the bedframe that extend lower than the mattress.

French cleat tool storage system

I have used pegboard for years as an easy way to hang my hand tools. I can see why it is popular with a lot of guys: its fairly inexpensive and there are a wide variety of hangers you can buy that will allow you to hang just about anything.

The problem I have always faced is that the little metal holders continually fall off when I try to remove a tool.  I understand there are more modern hangers than the ones I used that will stay in place, but I never got around to purchasing any. I bought an assorted box of hangers when I set up my pegboard and never added to it.

Nor did I ever move the pegs around. I set them in place and instead of getting the right hanger for the tool, Ive always just plopped tools on whatever hanger they will fit. Usually awkwardly.

Ultimately, I like building stuff for the shop whenever possible, rather than buying stuff. Especially since everything else on my tool hutch is hand-made.

This french cleat system lets you get creative with storage and is infinitely adjustable to your tools and set-up. Plus french cleats are sturdy. I use one to hold my TV on the wall.

Forbidden City Beijing China

This weekend I saw a documentary on the Smithsonian channel about the building of the Forbidden City in Beijing, China. The major architect and builder was a Vietnamese prisoner who built the City in less than three years. An amazing feat. However he spent the previous decade amassing all the materials and forming them into their correct shapes and sizes so that they could be assembled quickly.

The most interesting fact about the construction of the palace was that it used no pegs or nails to join the massive beams, struts, and wooden supports together. The entire structure was assembled using an interlocking joint system that, once assembled, was extremely strong. It reminded me of the wooden puzzles I had as a child that, when assembled correctly, formed a cube, sphere, or animal such as a lion or a hog.

This interlocking joinery seems to have been a traditional type of construction throughout Asia. That got me to thinking, are Asian joints somehow different than those we are using in the West? So I googled some images of Japanese and Chinese joints to see what they looked like and found them to be very complex and beautifully ornate.

I am excited to announce a project Ive been working on for a few weeks now and I hope you will consider participating. Please watch the video below which will explain more. (Dont worry, I have a regular woodworking video tomorrow!)

Woodworking for Mere Mortals is the most time-consuming full-time job Ive ever had.  I love every minute of it and wouldnt trade my work for anything. The only part I dont particularly enjoy is spending a lot of time marketing in order to generate the ad revenue that keeps me in business. Unfortunately, the advertisements tend to become a barrier between me and the people who support WWMM the most.  My goal is to keep producing fun woodworking projects with less dependence on advertisers.

Click to get involved!

This is where Subbable comes in. It is brand new and something of an experiment at this point. Its vision is to provide a platform wherein viewers can directly support their favorite shows and earn perks in the process.

Most importantly, please understand that I will never to charge for my videos. I believe that allowing free access to woodworking info will pay itself back in future generations. If you arent in a position to support WWMM financially, I am completely cool with that.

But if you have enjoyed my show over the years and would like to help out, please consider a voluntary subscription. You can subscribe with any amount you feel WWMM is worth. Now heres the neat part: every dollar you spend goes into your "Perk Bank". You can save your perks and redeem them at various levels for all sorts of stuff available only to subscribers!

Please consider getting involved and learn more on my Subbable project page.

Another Thrift Store Table Redo

Made another quick trip to the thrift store this week and picked up this bedside table for 5 bucks!  It definitely wasnt my style at all but I just couldnt pass up a $5 table.  And I knew I could turn it into something I loved.
It was missing some drawer pulls, however, it had really nice bones.  And I cant walk away from a $5 table!  I primed and painted it a plain white and the molding on the front of the drawers got a couple of coats of Cloudy Morning, the paint I had left over from the master bath.  Then I added some glass drawer pulls I picked up at Lowes.
After I finished painting it, I decided I didnt care for the scroll work trim on the bottom of the table, so, off it went.
And I replaced it with a piece of scrap wood I already had.  I just measured the piece I removed and then cut the scrap piece to be the same size, then I attached with nails.
After that, it needed some roughing up so I took a piece of sandpaper and distressed the edges.  Heres a close up of the detail.....
Heres how it looks in our room!
Love it!  Simple, pretty, matches our blue TJ Maxx quilt and does its job of hiding our junk by the bed.....for 5 bucks.  Cant beat that!

Stay tuned for an awesome gift I made for my hubby for Fathers Day, inspired by a piece of 1951 memorabilia, our favorite summer movie and this.  Can you guess what it could be?  And Im gonna share another fun recipe perfect for Dad! Have a great one!

Window Frame Ideas

Every evening my hubby, our youngest and I go for a bike ride.  Its one of our favorite things to do just before sunset.  On our ride we always pass a house that had these wonderful HUGE old wood windows leaned up against their back garage, not being used for years.  To me, they were lovely and I couldnt believe they had been so easily discarded.  I finally persuaded hubby to go ask the owners about them.  Turns out, they didnt want them any longer so we happily took them off their hands.  Just goes to show, it certainly pays to ask, right?
Heres one of them before I did anything to it.

There were 4 windows total, each of them 6 feet tall, two of them 4 feet wide and two of them 2 feet wide.  Several of the panes were broken out of a couple of them, but after looking at the windows more closely, I figure they can be easily replaced.  And hopefully, inexpensively.

Im hoping to do something unique with one of the larger windows and
so I spent the weekend prepping it.

I happen to be in love with black window frames.  Im usually not one to incorporate lots of the color black into my decor but there is something about black window frames that I find stunning.
Here are a couple of inspiration pics I found while hunting for some inspiration.

via
I especially like them in mostly white rooms.

via
And I really love them with warm wood accents.

via
They really make quite an architectural statement.

via

via

via

Of course, our house looks nothing like any of these and we arent changing our windows if thats what youre thinking.  I dont think were up for that kind of project.  ;)

But I love looking for inspiration this way.  Most of the ideas I came across for using window frames were a chalkboard, frame for photos, room dividers, mirrors, etc.  Im still not 100% sure what Im doing with this big ol thing but I love it so much I just have to use it, right?  And it is a "souvenir" of sorts to remind me of the relaxing bike rides we take each evening after dinner that have become so special to me.

I gave it a good cleaning and then scraped all the old paint off and painted it a color called Charcoal Sketch from Better Homes and Gardens.  Heres how it looks now.

As you can see, it is huge.  But thats what I love about it.  Ive never been all that into old window frames but this one is a treasure because of the size.  And thats why I really want to do something special with it.  I just have to figure out what that is!  :)

Stay tuned.....
