Fitting Your Shed Is As Simple As 1 2 3 The best Idea Wood Working Tactics

Sheds are considered as simple yet sturdy structures found outside of the house, usually situated in the backyard or garage. The importance of a shed in every home is strengthened by the need for a storage space where tools, house repair items, spare parts, and house supplies can easily be accessed and organized. Today, wide arrays of sheds are available in the market that relatively responds to our specific storage need. May our need for shed be for our animals, hobbies, or just a storage space, there will surely be a specific-use shed available for us to install.

Contrary to everyone’s belief, installing a shed is not as uncomplicated as it seems to be. The first thing to do is to identify your need. By doing so, you must be able to determine your purpose of having a shed. Having a clear approach on this will help you in choosing the right type of shed. If you are not decided yet on this though, you can consider first the most generic items that a shed should contain and from there, have a shed-type selected for it.

Now that you have decided on the type of shed, you can easily follow these hassle free steps in installing your new storage space:

1. Check your local building code for the allowed shed size. By doing so, you will be properly guided with your community’s policies on shed building, keeping you and your housemates safe from any danger that might be brought about by misconstruction.

2. Next thing to do is to buy all the building materials and prepare the necessary tools in the installation. While preparing, segregate already the materials according to its specific use and function. For example, separate the materials to be used as the base and foundation from the items you will use for attachment (bolts and nuts, screws, nails, adhesives, and the like). Your working tools may also include gloves and working shoes, or a mask if some soldering will be done. Don’t forget also to prepare your shed installing plan that includes your working diagrams, guidelines, measurements, and the like. Some shed making kits already come with instructions or how-to-build diagrams, so better have them on hand.

3. Keep in mind the place where your shed will be installed. Check the level of the ground for cracks, imbalance, or other deformation. The shed should also be situated in a space free from possible obstructions like tree branches, communication lines, and the like. The main purpose of this is that the shed is still categorized as a solid structure, thus, must be constructed with safety in mind.

4. Create your shed by following the instructions in your prepared guideline or work plan. Remember to work your way from the bottom or foundation, next to the walls, then to the roof, and finally to the finishing touches. Ensure as well that all appendages are properly installed and tightened for these also contribute to the strength of the structure.


Your shed is now done and ready for storage and organizing. See, it’s really that easy.

Last project for the year

Whew! Im done!
I decided to change course and defer the tea box until next year--my joints are killing me, its freezing cold in the workshop, and after 5 months of wood work, Im just plum tuckered out so I did a brief project for a couple of young friends who wanted a lazy susan as a gift for their brother. Here is the top out of Phillipine mahogany with a bottom out of pine:


When Ive assembled it with the lazy susan bearing Ill send you one last photo.

Wow, Im tired.

Filling the Bottom of the Chest

I know tonight should be my mortise entry into the "How Id Do It Friday" co-op with several others in the woodworking blogging community, but unfortunately Im having some technical difficulties with the video. Hopefully Ill get it up really soon. Instead, and perhaps to help distract me from my technological frustrations, I changed my focus tonight to write some more about my traditional tool chest build.

By all rights, if I were to follow standard logic and the plan, then the next step in my build of a traditional tool chest (in an anarchistic style) would be to wrap the carcass and lid in skirts. Well here in the Oldwolf Workshop we follow the standard substandard logic and I think we lost the plan a couple months ago so I decided to change it up and attack things out of order. I filled the chest with the varrious tool holding apparati first.

Seriously there is some logic to the decision, mostly it is based on the fact that I live in Wisconsin, and that my shop is really a tin can with some nice tools inside. Its not the best shop Ive ever had (Ive had some nice basement shops in the past) and its not the worst shop Ive had, (long time readers will remember the Wood Shop Jr. a 5X9 closet at the bottom of some stairs). Eric Bushèe over at the Breen Bush Design Blog listed mine on the top of his "Poor Excuse for a Shop" workshop list, and hes probably right. (though I think I am in good company.)

In the end I dont believe its the quality of the shop that matters as much as the quality of the work that comes from it. I would rather be making sawdust working out of the back of a 68 VW van than no making sawdust at all. But the reality is that winter in Wisconsin slows down my progress, and heating it as much as I can is getting pricier and pricier. This year I decided to try something different, Im going to clear out some space in our dining room and move in my portable joinery bench so I can work in comfort and warmth this winter.

The decision to build the tool chest now came from the exercise of trying to decide what tools I should bring along. The best answer I could think of would be to bring all the basic ones I could use. Now its November and the snow hasnt really flown here yet. but once it does I wont be able to get my van up the hill to my shop to load the chest and bring it home. So the smart money is on making the chest usable first, in case the snow flies, and finishing off the skirting after that, and thats how we come to building the apparatus to hold and store the tools.

I wanted to start by making sure I utilized the advantage of vertical height in the chest. At several points in "The Anarchist Tool Chest" Chris makes mention of the front of the tool chest as a great place to squeeze in a tool rack to hold joinery saws, chisels, or tri-squares, but he doesnt demonstrate anything. It really is a simple concept to come up with something though. At first blush you may be tempted to to just run a thin board with a couple spacers to hold it out from the chest wall.

This was my first consideration but I worried a little about storage through the centuries. If I hung a joinery saw in this configuration I decided it may put some pressure on the blades toe as gravity pushes it against the rail and the chest wall. I decided I would run two strips, one against the chest wall and one seperated by a couple spacers.

 I located the strips far enough up the wall that the handles will sit below the top edge comfortably but there is enough height to hang up to a 16" backsaw

I did have to make a switch up to the wood I was using for the insides of the chest. Originally I was going to use poplar like I did for the shell. I miscalculated my poplar purchase though and 60 bf turned out to not be enough, I had estimated 50 board foot with a 20% mark up for waste, and for a while I thought I was going to get away clean. In the end, I will end up using most of the 60 bf for the shell, bottom, lid, and skirts, with a very small amount of waste.

This works out well though because I was able to pick up some pine for the insides, and I had always planned on using hickory for the portions that need to be "long wearing."

Once the rack was in place, of course I had to set the chest down off the workbench to get a good look at how things hung in the rack.

Not for sure everything that would live in there eventually, but I wanted to weight it down and fill it up to see how much I could get away with and I was surprised at how much.
 By now the chest was getting pretty weighty and it was a bit of a struggle muscling it up and down from the workbench, but I was too excited not to give the rack a proper try.

As I looked at what I had accomplished a thought occurred to me. If this chest managed to survive intact for a century or more, would the glue and the nails be able to support the weight of these tools for all time? Sadly, I decided I probably needed to reinforce it with some support columns that ran to the bottom of the chest.

So I milled up a couple blanks of poplar to be wide enough square to support both of the long rails.


 Then I attacked them with the spokeshave to bevel the edge that would be facing away from the walls. The corner braces each had one corner chamfered, the center support had two corners chamfered.


I planed away the end grain on a shooting board until they each fit in place snugly, Then I tacked them into place with some finishing nails.

With the rack done it was time to move forward into the saw till. I liked what Chris had done in TATC, but I had a few ideas I thought might improve it. First Chriss was made to hold four saws and I wanted to hold 5, A full size 24" rip and crosscut saw with larger aggressive teeth, some shorter 20" rip and crosscut saws with a finer tooth set, and eventually a larger 18" tenon saw. So first I needed up upsize the width of the till boards.


I also understand that underneath the saws is a great place to store a decent amount of those "every once in a while tools" like a hacksaw, saw files, metal punches and a taper reamer. Some of my files are a little on the long side so I decided to make an arched cut out beneath the saw kerfs to allow space for longer items if need be.

The tool rack I had just installed had to be taken into account as well. I had to move the start of the tills over a bit to make space for clearing the saw closest to the wall easily past the rack.


I ganged the two pieces of pine together with some screws and took the work to the bandsaw. To get the right cut for the kerfs I made a couple of passes to remove the waste.

I was super happy with how this turned out.


I set it on the bench and played around a bit to see how I wanted the saws to fit. I mocked it up inside the chest as well and found I could remove another 1/2" off the front side of these tills and still clear the hanging rack just fine.

I know its only another 1/2" of space but inside this chest Ill take every little bit I can.


I chose to set the tills in place off center so the handles would all bunch up on the right side. This left enough room on the far end for my saw vise. I measured out and installed a couple cleats for the outer wall  and secured it to the till boards with some more finishing nails.

I also toe-nailed in a couple nails connecting the till boards themselves to the chest wall.


The saw till was in. Again I lifted the chest down off the workbench, hopefully for the last time, and I started playing around with the spacing I had left.

Chris installed another long, shorter partition along the back wall for his moulding planes and his hollows and rounds. I am still in the market for most of those things. I decided I was pretty happy leaving the whole side open until I tried to decide how to fit my sharpening supplies into the chest.

At this point I use the Super Scary Sharp Sandpaper Sharpening System (try saying that 3 times fast) I know it will cost me more over time, but the initial buy in is very low cost compared to other methods, and that is important in our house right now. The big supply you need for this system is a reliable flat surface. Some folks use glass plates, When I was looking around I decided upon manufactured stone tiles from the home store.

They come in 12" X 12" sizes which holds 3 1/3rd sheets on a plate and they are plenty flat for my purposes. They have held up well for a couple of years now and if I break one I can go and replace it for less that 2 dollars. They are a big item to store though and I wanted to fit them in nicely.


I decided to put in a cross till with a pine board I could just life out from between its battons if I so desire. My box for my carving chisels fit very nicely in the space as well. This will be easy to modify and remove in the future if it turns out to be a bad idea, but for right now it seems like the right move.


With that all said and done I filled the bottom of the chest as much as possible (for now) and rested the lid on it for the evening. I really am very happy with the way the inside is working out. It gives me high hopes for the upper half of the chest. Building in the sliding trays. But that will have to wait until next time we visit the chest.

Back to the Bible Box

I had finished carving the front of the new bible box . . .


 . . . and I had finished the sides.


It was time to start on the lid, period or not I enjoy carving the lids. It gives me a little chance to work on a larger piece and the lid can really draw the piece together. With that in mind I try to pull elements from both the front and the sides.




The thumbnail cuts from the sides and the opposing hearts from the front.


I had the main parts of the box finished.


But I had the inside of the box to worry about and I wasnt sure what to do. At the time I was preparing this piece to include in an art gallery show Id been invited to. The show eventually canceled (But the good news is I secured the opportunity to carry my own show once I have enough pieces built up, Its gonna be a busy year for me I think) I wanted to do or try something different. 

In the middle of trying to figure it out I had the chance to take my oldest daughter to the Milwaukee Art Museum. I had an amazing day and took many, many, many pictures of their selection from the Chipstone furniture collection. I also got a look at this Game Chest, carved and inlaid and the inside was lined with marbled paper. 



I remembered marbelizing paper back in one of my old art classes, it wasnt too difficult of a thing to do. A few minutes searching the web and I found the recipes I needed. A little liquid starch and a little acrylic paint later and I had something to work with.


In case there is any interest I shot some video of the process.


The results inside the box can be stunning.

The Wood Work Bench The Old But Effective Standard in Work Benches

Leonardo da Vinci was best known for his remarkable paintings, such as the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. A man of great skill and genius, Leonardo was also an ingenious inventor. Labor-saving cranes for easy lifting, spring-powered clocks, diving gears, water pumps, drilling machines-these are just some of the machines Leonardo da Vinci was known to have designed and created. He was indeed one of the most prolific inventors in history.

What helped Leonardo da Vinci conceptualize and build machines at such an extraordinary rate? Well, he certainly doesnt have computers equipped with design software. Back in Leonardos days, inventors do it all manually. Certainly, Leonardo had books, drafting boards with parchment, straight edges, quills, and clay models to aid him in conceptualizing his designs. Chances are he also had tons of tools.

But how did he organize all of these? 

Simple: with the help of a good old wood work bench.
Ancient Greek architects, medieval alchemists, Renaissance inventors like Leonardo da Vinci may have different set of tools to craft their work, but they all have the same wood bench where they organize their tools and do most of their work. With the advent of digital technology, most engineers and designers have disposed of the traditional work bench in favor of their computer-driven digital bench. Yet the wood work bench is still indispensable in most peoples working areas.
Why Get A Wood Work Bench?


Today, there are many materials that can be used to build work benches-steel, aluminum, melamine, synthetic wood-but a wood work bench is still the best thing for heavy-duty work. Work benches made of melamine and synthetic wood may be cheap and easy to carry around different work areas, but they cannot match the toughness and durability of wood work benches. Most steel and aluminum work benches are corrosion-proof and may handle all those hard poundings, but nothing can really compare to the aesthetic attributes of the traditional wood work bench.

Another great thing with having a wooden bench in your area is that it invokes a feel-good atmosphere. And that is really the most essential thing that you should have in a work area-a feel-good, serene aura that will allow you to focus on what you are doing.

Solid hardwood is somewhat expensive, but it is the kind of wood that makes a good wooden bench. Typically, pine, maple, cherry, and mahogany make a good solid bench. Fir, oak, walnut, and beech are also used to create firm benches. But you can also build a wood bench with just one type of wood or you can make a work bench with different types of wood.
Size

The size of your bench would mainly depend on the work that you will do. If you will do carpentry or any other tasking work, then you will need to get a large, solid wood work bench with cabinets and shelves to organize your tools. Another thing to consider is the size of your working area. If you have a small workspace, then you may just opt to get a small or medium-sized wood work bench with lots of shelves and cabinets for easy storage of your tools.

A House In The Trees Part V

Progress on the Tree House has progressed at a steady (and slow) rate.
The 3/4" x 12" beast.
I began the actual site work for the tree house by setting the large bolts that will support it. The bolts are critical because they must not only be strong enough to hold up the Treehouse, they must also allow free movement between the trees and the Treehouse in order to accommodate movement of the trees. After I had installed the first few bolts, I looked at the physical space outlined by the three (3) trees I planned on using and realized that I wasnt happy with the size of shape.

In this video, I  describe the change in shape and the replacement of a 10" bolt with a 12" bolt in order to accommodate the fact that the bolt will no longer be perpendicular to the beam.



This next video shows the first of the main beams. At least . . . it tries to. Sorry for the dark shots. By the time I finished that day, the sun had set.



Next up, Ill begin permanently mounting the main beams.

Tool of the Month 1

Okay, first the title is probably way to optimistic for my reality - but I will try.

In case you didnt already know, I love tools - especially old tools with stories to tell and skills to teach. Ive shared some of these in past posts, but will now be attempting to be more regular about it.

The idea is I will pick one tool a month and post about it. Ill share its story if I know it, how I use it, any unique features, any questions I have about it, and what I love about it. So, thats the idea - lets get started.


"Worth" 16oz Bell Faced Claw Hammer

I picked this up with a broken off handle on one of my early tool hunting expeditions back East - probably Maine or New Hampshire, but I cant remember exactly. I punched out the remaining part of the handle, salvaged the wedges and made a new handle from local Alaskan birch.

I had never done that before, and at first I was rather intimidated by the idea. But, like so many other things I have learned on this hand tool adventure, its really just a matter of getting started and figuring it out as you go along. As I worked on the shavehorse with drawknife and spokeshaves, I just kept holding the handle and pretending to hammer with it, and my hand told me what to do - thinner, longer, more flair, etc. In my mind it was going to be a round handle, but as I worked on it, the flattened octagon shape just felt right. In the end, I had a handle that was custom made to fit my hand. There are some pretty big dividends to NOT having a plan sometimes - in fact, in my experience, this is true most of the time. So if youve ever thought about rehandling a tool - I say do it!



In this shot you can see the "Worth" logo and also some marks that show a previous owner did some hammering with the side of the adze eye. Hmm. I wonder how this little guy ended up with that broken handle? (Not that the side hammering would do that, but I think it shows a level of disrespect for the tool.)


Worth was a house brand sold by the large hardware company of Bigelow & Dowse located in Boston, MA. From what I can find, this brand was made for B&D by Pexto, and sold between 1925-1945, which makes this hammer at least 67 years old. Cool. It also has a "REG US PATT OFF" imprint, which I find a bit unusual, as I dont see anything unique and patentable about it. Curious.

I also have a drawknife with the Worth mark on it (and strangley enough it is my "go to" drawknife, just like this is my "go to" hammer) but it also has an asterisk or star stamp as well, which I think I recall seeing elsewhere as being a symbol that Worth used. Id love to learn more about this stuff.

Another thing I really appreciate about this hammer is the smooth, slightly convex face. I can consistently sink nails to just below the surface without leaving the so-called "French marks" - an old English term I rather expect.


And a shot of my initials - Im not sure why I didnt brand this one - maybe because I was thinking of it more as an "owners mark" rather than a "makers" mark? Of course, I did make the handle...


I think hammers are under appreciated - but this one makes me happy every time I pick it up.

home stretch on the new metal shop

 when last we visited this project back in september, the carpenters had just finished getting the slate on the roof ... after that it was on to the siding and window trim outside, and the insulation, second floor radiant heat,and sheetrock inside.  click the photos to enlarge them ..
it was kind of a thrill when the lights went on and siding was mostly finished ...
we still had to have the concrete professionals back to pour the slab for the 
steel/blower/compressor shed .. 
 and we had to build the rather elaborate 20 long rack to store all the small in size, but 20 to 24 long raw materials ... fortunately, the carpenters were called away on another job for a day, which gave us time to figure out the rack before the roof went on .. mucho easier that way ..
the shed is fitted here with a bronze color standing seam roof by donnie dorrs metal shop ..
 and inside, we did some painting, and reconfigured the chop saw tables into a mockup work table so we could figure out where to hang up the welding fume extractor.  we ran the pipes to the blower thursday ..
 boilers these days are amazing ... this little guy puts out 80,000 btus, enough to heat both floors, (+/- 1500 square feet in a vemont winter), and provide domestic hot water for the sink and bathroom.  exhaust out in pvc pipe.  no chimney ...
 ahhh, the doors .. nobody made a cheap standard unit three doors wide, so we had to cobble these together with parts from a company whose name escapes me now .. we made up some quicky transoms from 8/4 pine and ordered up some custom thermopane to fill them.
 there were a couple reasons for that configuration .. #1, you can open the doors totally in the summer like below, and should we move on at some point, the openings are framed to accept regular 9 x 7 commercial overhead doors .. presto, a heated, two car garage with a mother in law apartment above  ... the plumbing and radiant for the second floor was roughed in before the sheetrock went up ..
 
 a few notes below on the quicky transoms ...
 9 3" x 16" plus the frames
 essentially, the frames are butt jointed, timberlock construction, with applied moldings to accept the glass .. framed in the shop and screwed in over the door units .. cheap, easy, and fast ... you dont get that combo often enough ...
