home stretch on the new metal shop
when last we visited this project back in september, the carpenters had just finished getting the slate on the roof ... after that it was on to the siding and window trim outside, and the insulation, second floor radiant heat,and sheetrock inside. click the photos to enlarge them ..
it was kind of a thrill when the lights went on and siding was mostly finished ...
we still had to have the concrete professionals back to pour the slab for the
steel/blower/compressor shed ..
and we had to build the rather elaborate 20 long rack to store all the small in size, but 20 to 24 long raw materials ... fortunately, the carpenters were called away on another job for a day, which gave us time to figure out the rack before the roof went on .. mucho easier that way ..
the shed is fitted here with a bronze color standing seam roof by donnie dorrs metal shop ..
and inside, we did some painting, and reconfigured the chop saw tables into a mockup work table so we could figure out where to hang up the welding fume extractor. we ran the pipes to the blower thursday ..
boilers these days are amazing ... this little guy puts out 80,000 btus, enough to heat both floors, (+/- 1500 square feet in a vemont winter), and provide domestic hot water for the sink and bathroom. exhaust out in pvc pipe. no chimney ...
ahhh, the doors .. nobody made a cheap standard unit three doors wide, so we had to cobble these together with parts from a company whose name escapes me now .. we made up some quicky transoms from 8/4 pine and ordered up some custom thermopane to fill them.
there were a couple reasons for that configuration .. #1, you can open the doors totally in the summer like below, and should we move on at some point, the openings are framed to accept regular 9 x 7 commercial overhead doors .. presto, a heated, two car garage with a mother in law apartment above ... the plumbing and radiant for the second floor was roughed in before the sheetrock went up ..
a few notes below on the quicky transoms ...
9 3" x 16" plus the frames
essentially, the frames are butt jointed, timberlock construction, with applied moldings to accept the glass .. framed in the shop and screwed in over the door units .. cheap, easy, and fast ... you dont get that combo often enough ...

Progress On The Giant Tables
Thats Trevor down there on the end of the table .... about 30 away ... Click the picture to enlarge it and see him smiling away down there. Hes allowed to smile as this table has been pretty much his baby. He is our CNC man, and I dont think we could build these tables without one. I mean, how would I even make a template for the 1020" (85 foot) radius edge of the table? Beats me .... Below is the assembled top of the 26 x 9 table we have been working on. I have described it in a couple of previous posts here and here ... check them out for the full story ... Let me know what you think
Here we are (again) working on the table. Thats Steve Holman (on the table) below of Holman Studios and his assistant Kevin helping us get it together ...
Were still on the temporary base here, and Steve is working on the real base in his shop just down the road ... Were planning to assemble the whole thing, granite and all, at least once here in my garage before we ship it all to New Jersey, along with its smaller (8x 20) cousin that we started work on yesterday.
Yesterday, we assembled the temporary base for the 20 table in the adjoining bay of my garage and Trevor started cutting the mdf parts for that project ... If I built these all the time, we would definitely need a MUCH bigger shop.
This one is only five four foot wide pieces, but it still takes up half the shop ...
Yesterday, Herb Johnson of Johnson Marble and Granite, of Proctor, Vermont came to get the first five granite templates. Thats his shop above. Herb has done much stone work for me in the past including the marble vanity top in this post, and all of the marble tops on this page here.
Hell do the 10 end pieces with the miters and their neighbors and see how they fit with the rest of the templates and then finish up with the six center pieces. He claims Ive done the hard part by making the templates .... Glad to hear that ....

An Update on the Shop
Well, my friends, Ive been a little light on the blogging lately. Besides the normal rush of activity associated with my Twins birthdays and Christmas, Ive spent every free minute in the shop, trying to make progress on phase 1 of my shop renovations. Phase 1 consists of re-wiring, insulating and sheathing the North, East & South walls.
Working on the shop so much lately (and probably the new year too) has made me reflect on how far the shop has come in the 3-1/2 years since we bought the house. Heres a video I just found. I shot it that first summer in the house, 2008. Its not the best quality, but it does capture the clutter and disarray of the that first setup.
Now, here is a shop tour from November of 2011. Watch it carefully and I promise that though it may at first look just as cluttered as 2008, it is much more organized. Once phase 1 of the renovations are complete, I expect the the shop to be very organized.
Thanks for checking out the shop and stopping by the Blog. This is actually my 100th post, and the experience has been so much nicer than I could have imagined. Thanks.
Now, please, go occupy your shop.
And . . . yes. I know I cant spell. Even a degree in English couldnt cure me of that.
